Getting Ready for Spring o9

What can I possibly do to torture the next groups of ED 407 students? I am making an attempt to balance to big assignments with the smaller *fiddling* around ones so that there is time to play and time to produce something useful.
I think the first blog with have a Picasa slide show in it rather than have everyone send me the link or share their album with me like they did last time... let's see how that goes.
Also, there will be a FAQ wiki set up as a holding pen for things that don't make sense. That way everyone has a place to go to post their questions, see who else is confused AND solve some things too.

My Inner Geek is Failing

I cannot seem to convert Jumpcut videos so they can be uploaded to YouTube

First the backround:
Assignment: Create a 30 second movie on a copyright law
Tools: only images/video captured from a cell phone AND a web editing tool (Animoto or Jumpcut)
Students: University level pre-service educators
Intended use: commercials on our Univ site reminding students of copyright law
Storage: YouTube channel for University

So that seems okay~ right?

Now the problem:
Problem: Jumpcut is FANTASTIC for cell phone images/video BUT proprietary. I cannot find a way to convert Jumpcut movies so they can be uploaded to YouTube. The Yahoo help says two things: 1. not possible at this time 2. use Keepvid with URL (didn't work)

I have used the Firefox Download Helper and now have .avi which do not upload to YouTube.
Somewhere in the sourcecoding their is a way to update the ffmpeg but I "know not of these things"

A solution I seek:
  1. convert a Jumpcut for YouTube
  2. convert a Download Helper .avi for YouTube
  3. update the ffmpeg on a Mac to customize the video output in Download Helper
I have included a Jumpcut sample I made as well as a Jing shot of the ffmpeg preferences window.

Wow~ it feel like the Sunday New York Times crossword to me!

IN thinking about the...

IN thinking about the audience yesterday, I am struck by how little resistance there was to the use of technology in a hybrid environment. The other thing that struck(?) me is there were only 2 case ____ people there. Everyone else was community college. listen

The community colleges,...

The community colleges, are throwing the needs in such large numbers that the room had more than 40 people interested in Hybrid teaching structure, K12 is falling sadly behind. listen

Hybrid Done Right

This follows up the presentation Dr. Rod and I prepared for today's TechEd '08 conference.

The audience was predominantly community college folk with a smattering of 4-year and the 2 courageous K-12 representees.

Presentation was well received.

Lisa shared the basic building blocks: the "rules" stuff college people need to know. Hybrid needs to supplement f2f time *meaningfully* not with bigger homework assignments!
I promised 3 things:
  • grouping techniques
  • examples of collaborative assignments in a CBM like Blackboard or Angel
  • my new found passion for the SMS possibilities and how they relate
In hindsight, I needed more time. My closing was meant to be a cell phone "American Idol" type of vote on the tools presented. We really didn't have enough time to authenticate all the accounts so we could SMS our votes.
AND- this crowd seemed like a deeper investigation into the types of assignments used for groups would have been useful.

In a second version:
  • grouping techniques
  • examples assignments for the different types of groups in Blackboard
  • different SMS tease
But man-o-man was this fun!

Social Networking Evolves

"Friday unveiled new dynamic profiles that support Google's new OpenSocial APIs. Users of Plaxo's Pulse social network can now create distinct professional and personal profiles that include photos, contact information and privacy settings. Any applications written to the Google OpenSocial APIs can be embedded in the profiles, Plaxo said."

This is interesting. As digital citizenship becomes a topic for perspective teachers- this adds a new layer. I live in a cautionary work environment- a district office. What could be a place of incredible "could be's" is instead a place of suspicious "could be's". When MySpace is discussed, as a technology popular with students, the tenor is cautionary and suspicious. Predators and preteens posting drinking photos that ruin their career.
Well, okay. But what about an entire generation who wants to connect and communicate? Are those bad desires? Connecting and communicating with your peers? What a terrible motivation.

Can't you isolate yourself in front of a TV like we did when we were kids? Okay, that's a low blow. We rode bikes and skateboards- without helmets.

I can't stop. This whole attitude that it was better when I was young has become irritating to me. (Well, okay, ask any teacher I ever had, sorry Mrs. Steinhof, but I haven't ever had much patience for stasis- even in 3rd grade)

Anyway- how about this moment shared recently- a person from a generation that uses "boom" to describe themselves- tattoos is the topic. Tattoos, years of young women with tattoos visible above their posterior. And apparently this is a bad thing. The argument is that one day, all these women will age and suddenly be filled with some deep regret for caving to a trend. But I wonder, how exactly will this be true regret when half your friends have the same stretched out ink on their back??? Is it a reasonable thing to think an entire group of sleeved 40 year olds is going to bemoan something they all shared. Long hair was lame once too...

So it is with social networking software- just as the naysayers jump on the latest MySpace idiocy- post pictures of yourself boozing with friends and get busted in your "professional" life. Duh- is this technology static?

Uh, no. Technological Darwinism eliminates the weakness. Social networking sites now offer a professional and private setting. Jump on Boomers- scare me with the next bad thing.

If MySpace and Google want to take this to the next step, bring it on. I want to support an educational environment that embraces what is and knows how to support a digital citizen of all ages. Represent yourself for your intended audience and trust your audience to allow you the privacy to socialize and be professional using the same medium.
